There was an exhibition celebrating 40 of Scottish photography and it was brilliant. The staff/guides were equally brilliant always will to help

Fascinating. The collection is arranged into eras, which is so helpful. I was particularly interested in the period prior to the Union. Having stayed in the Hôtel de Guise in Nancy, it was fascinating to come face to face with Mary of Guise. There's too much to see in a day, so I need to come back and view another period. The café is so good, although very busy. Not much into gift shops, but I could have bought so much here had I not been travelling light.

I am not really into portrait art, but even I found a few pictures that were worth a moments appreciation in this gallery. The best bit, though, was the building itself. The Great Hall was stunning, as was the library. These two rooms alone were well worth the visit. It is free to enter. There are lockers for bags and a lockable umbrella stand. There was a cafe, souvenir shop and toilets on every floor. The toilets were very clean. The gallery is wheelchair accessible and there are disabled toilets.

Not been to the portrait gallery for a long time and it was the perfect setting for a catch up with some friends. No quite to get in, not too busy or quiet in the gallery and all very well laid out. The shop had a great selection of items and although we never ate there the cafe looked and smelled delicious.
